It's simple! Just hold your coupons for a month before using them. That's right, put them in a stack and come back in 4 weeks. Promotions are generally structured so that a product will have a printed coupon and then go on sale in a few weeks. The purpose of the sale following the coupons is twofold: (i) on the books sales will increase and level out instead of showing a steep spike followed by a sharp decline; (ii) physiologically, coupon users are more likely to re-buy the same product when they come back into the store and notice it on sale. Don't be a sucker to marketing, Clip and Save!

Ever notice how Circuit City usually has better advertised deals than Best Buy but they always have a catch (i.e. require large mail-in rebates)? Simply take the Circuit City ad to Best Buy and voila; you can get the same deal without having to mess with the mail-in rebate(s)! Note: This works best when you have the actual printed ads from the store/newspaper rather than website printouts.
The next time you purchase something at Pacific Sunwear, ask to sign up for their email list. Once you are signed up they will email you a 15% off printable coupon. You can use this coupon over and over again because it doesn't have a unique barcode (discount taken at the register) nor does it have an expiration date. Now that you're in the know, you'll continually get 15% off your entire purchase at Pacific Sunwear!

Next time you want to purchase something online that requires a credit card but don't want to sign up for the recurring subscription charges; request a temporary credit card number from your bank. Now-a-days most big banks (ex: Citibank) offer disposable credit card numbers for one time purchases. Sign-up and within minutes you will be provided with a temporary card number that will allow you to purchase your item(s) without having to worry about canceling subscriptions. When the merchant tries to re-bill your credit card, their charge will be denied because the card is no longer valid. Pay for what you want, not what they want!

Both Linen's & Things and Bed Bath & Beyond accept each others coupons with no questions asked. You don't have to haggle or make a big fuss, simply present your coupon at checkout and the discount will be applied. Now that is competing head-to-head!
Want to take that portable dvd player or camcorder for a spin before committing to buying it? Buy an open box item instead of a "new" one and stores like Best Buy and Circuit City won't charge you a restocking fee when you return the product. Make sure to ask whether there is a 14-day or 30-day return policy on the product because the time frame remains intact on open box items. Anyone need a portable dvd player for that 3-day weekend get-a-way?
